Split second photo
Columbus Ohio
about me
I’ve been doing freelance photography in a variety of roles
since entering college, when I began shooting for The Pitt News. After a year-and-a-half
covering college events and sports, I took a photojournalism class taught by J
Bruce Bauman of the Pittsburgh Press. He told me if I was serious about
studying photojournalism I should go to Missouri or Ohio U. I transferred to
Ohio University the following fall.
While earning my bachelor’s in visual communications /
Multimedia, I began working at the photo department of the Ohio University
College of Osteopathic Medicine. This work introduced me to studio photography,
color printing, and the workflow used to move jobs through a process to
completion.
After graduation, I began doing photography for The Athens
Messenger. This almost daily sports
shooting experience and a prior boss from the OU College of Medicine led to
freelance work for Kinetic, a company that documented the Kentucky Derby for
the Kentucky Derby Museum. I learned how
to set up wired remote cameras my first year there, which led to 12 more years
of setting up and operating remote finish line cameras for Kinetic.
As newspaper readership declined, I refocused my attention
to providing photography for artists, who need images for entry into juried
shows. A collaboration with other OUCOM
photographer introduced me to shooting with polarized light to control
reflection on art glass marbles. This experience led to work shooting artist
portfolios, with a special interest in glass.
My photos for glass blower Henry Lavine have been featured on art show
posters in Florida, New York, and for the Ann Arbor Arts festival, where my
image was used for a poster and as the basis for a show tee shirt the following
year.
Expertise with shooting glass has led to studio photography
for the Ohio non-profit Cannabis Museum, where I’ve shot thousands of images of
collection items for the museum database.
This work has solidified my skills with macro imagery and compositing
images to make the entire artifact appear in focus. Other museum projects include shooting and
providing artwork for a series of thirty 20x30 inch aluminum travel display
prints. I’ve also shot and composited individual sections of museum apothecary
cases for life size banner prints with legible jar labels, these have been used
at Comfest and other museum outreach events.
I’ve been a passionate photographer for my entire adult life
and would be excited to talk with you and your team about your photography
needs, whether on location or in the studio. I look forward to hearing from you.
